Travel business name ideas: naming a travel brand
What a travel or hospitality brand name has to do, four kinds of names that work, what to avoid, and a quick test to run before you launch.
Travel brands are named for a moment of daydreaming and then used in a moment of stress. The name has to make someone want to go somewhere, and it also has to be easy to find again in an inbox full of booking confirmations, on a boarding pass and in a hurried search at an airport.
What a travel brand name has to do
- Suggest movement or arrival. The best travel names feel like the start of a trip.
- Work across languages. Travellers come from everywhere, so a name that is easy to say in several languages reaches more of them.
- Survive a confirmation email. It will be read in subject lines, on receipts and on a phone with poor signal.
- Leave the map open. A name tied to one city or one country has to be explained when the business adds a second.
Four kinds of travel names that work
1. The travel word
Fly, voyage, way, trip, stay. These say travel in one syllable and need no explaining. Flyova suits flights or a booking app, VoyaFlow a trip planner, Wayvio a route or tour brand, and SeedStay short stays or eco lodging.
2. The map word
Atlas, route, castle, journey. Words that suggest a bigger picture than one booking. EasyAtlas works for a planning tool or a guidebook brand, and TravelCastle for a premium tour operator or a heritage stays site.
3. The feeling of going
Some travel names sell the mood rather than the logistics. LoveIsTravel suits honeymoon and couples' travel, OnWayTravel a friendly agency, and Lateish has an easy going sound that suits late checkouts, nightlife guides or slow travel.
4. The coined name that travels
Short coined names with open vowels are easy to say in most languages and do not point at any one destination. Amikyo, Asaga and Juyaa leave the destination open, which suits an agency, a hotel group or a booking platform that plans to grow across regions.
What to avoid
- Names that sound like an airline or a booking giant. Travel is dominated by a few large brands that watch for lookalikes. How to check a company name before you commit covers the checks.
- One destination in the name, unless that destination is the whole business.
- Spellings that collapse in other accents. Say it as a visitor from another country would and see if it still sounds like you.
- Generic word strings. Names like cheap flights deals are hard to remember and impossible to own.
A quick test before you launch
Write a fake confirmation email: "Your trip with ___ is booked." Read it on your phone, then say the name to a friend and ask them to search for it a day later. If it still makes the trip sound exciting and they find it on the first try, the name will work in both the daydream and the airport. Check that the .com is available or for sale, because travellers search for the exact address on the receipt.
