Real estate and home business name ideas
What a real estate, rental or home services name has to do, four kinds of names that work, what to avoid, and a quick test before you launch.
Home businesses are trusted with the biggest purchase most people make, or let into the house to fix something. Either way the name has to feel dependable before anyone meets you. It also has to work on a yard sign read from a passing car, a van parked outside a client's home and a listing page full of competitors.
What a home or property name has to do
- Read from a distance. Signs, vans and boards are seen at a glance, often while driving past.
- Feel trustworthy. Customers are letting you into their home or handing over a deposit.
- Fit the service level. A luxury developer and a local handyman want very different tones.
- Travel beyond one street. A name built on one neighbourhood has to be explained when the business moves into the next.
Four kinds of home names that work
1. The home word
Home is the obvious word, and pairing it with a second idea makes it ownable. Homeker sounds like home maker said quickly, which suits a renovation platform; Homiso is relaxed enough for loungewear and home comforts; and HomeAndGlow suits a lighting store.
2. The name on a building
Developers and design studios often want a name that sounds carved over an entrance. Rezidenzia adds an Italian ending to residence for branded residences, Arrch doubles the r in arch for an architecture studio, and Boundarie reads like the name of a quiet development.
3. The service in plain words
Home services win on clarity. FineFixer reads like a nickname for someone handy, and ApartaRent runs apartment into rent so a listings site says what it does in one word.
4. The gentle coinage
Interiors, nursery and garden brands benefit from soft, friendly names. LullaLoom blends lullaby and loom for baby bedding, and Gnomely gives the garden gnome a kind ending for a garden decor shop.
What to avoid
- Street or town names unless the business will never leave them.
- Names that sound like a large estate agency or property portal. Customers confuse them and their owners notice. How to check a company name before you commit covers the checks.
- Long names that do not fit on a sign. If it needs two lines on a yard board, it is too long.
- Clever spellings for trades. A customer looking for a plumber in a hurry will not search for a puzzle.
A quick sign test
Write the name in large letters on a sheet of paper, tape it to a window and read it from across the street. Then say out loud: "We bought the house through ___" or "___ is coming to fix the boiler." If it reads from across the street and sounds like someone you would let in, the name works. Last, check that the .com is available or for sale, because people search for the name they saw on the sign.
