Marketing agency name ideas: naming a marketing or ad tech brand

What a marketing agency or ad tech name has to do, four kinds of marketing names that work, what to avoid, and a quick pitch test to run.

A marketing brand is judged on its own marketing. Clients reason that a company that cannot name itself well will not name their campaign well either. That puts extra weight on the name of an agency or a marketing tool: it is the first piece of work a prospect ever sees from you.

What a marketing name has to do

  • Show some craft. The name is a sample of the work, so it should feel considered.
  • Say growth, reach or results without promising numbers. Clients want ambition, not hype.
  • Work in a pitch deck and an app store. Agencies and tools are bought in both places.
  • Leave room to change channels. Social, search and email rise and fall, and a name tied to one ages with it.

Four kinds of marketing names that work

1. The ad word, reshaped

Ad is the field's shortest word, and reshaping it makes a name ownable. Adversatile folds advert into versatile, Adverze ends on a sharp z that sounds like software, and Adtronica sounds like a machine built for advertising.

2. The growth word

Clients hire marketing to grow, so naming the result is persuasive. GrowthTrack is understood before the first meeting, PopGrowth suggests something rising fast, and LaunchWin reads as an upbeat instruction.

3. The action as a brand

Many marketing tools are named after the thing they help you do. Repostly makes repost a product name, SnagLead sounds like a sale being won, and Resendly uses a word everyone knows from their inbox.

4. The spreading word

Referral and sharing products benefit from a name that sounds like it travels. VyraLink reads as viral link with a y that makes it look like a name, and Vyrally sounds exactly like virally.

What to avoid

  • Promises in the name. Names that promise leads or results invite the question of what happens when they do not arrive.
  • Puns that need a slide to explain. If the joke needs the logo, it fails on a phone call.
  • Channel names that date quickly. A name built on today's platform can feel old when the platform does.
  • Names close to an established company in the field. How to check a company name before you commit covers the checks.

A quick pitch test

Put the name at the top of a one line proposal: "___ will run your launch this spring." Read it as a client would. If it sounds like an agency or a tool worth hiring, and it looks right on a slide next to a client's logo, the name works. Last, check that the .com is available or for sale; a marketing brand on a workaround address undercuts the first thing it sells.
