AI company name ideas: naming an AI product that lasts
What an AI company name has to do, four kinds of AI names that work, what to avoid, and a quick test to run before you launch the product.
AI products are named faster than almost anything else, often on the weekend the demo first works. That speed shows: lists of new AI companies are full of names that differ by one syllable. A good AI name has to stand out in that crowd today and still make sense when the technology inside the product has changed twice.
What an AI company name has to do
- Say what the product does for people, or leave room to. Customers buy an assistant, a tool or an answer, not a model.
- Sound like a product, not a paper. Names built from technical jargon read well to engineers and coldly to everyone else.
- Survive the next model. A name tied to one technique ages as soon as the technique does.
- Be easy to say in a meeting. AI tools spread by one person recommending them to a team, so the name has to work out loud.
Four kinds of AI names that work
1. The job the AI does
The clearest AI names say what the product does in plain words. GreeterAI is a receptionist that runs on AI, BotOut keeps bots off a website, and Boturo starts with bot and suits a chatbot builder. A buyer understands each one before reading the homepage.
2. The field's own words, used once
Gen, mind and cogni are words the field already uses, so they place a product in its category at a glance. The trick is to use one and pair it with something that gives the name its own shape. Imgentic joins img with the ending of agentic, Genstix ends in a crisp x, and CogniPower pairs thinking with energy.
3. The human name
AI that people talk to all day benefits from a name that sounds like someone rather than something. Humainary reads as human and imaginary at once, and Botwife is a playful name for an AI companion that nobody forgets after hearing it once.
4. The short coined name
A short invented word can hold whatever the product becomes. Mindax is six letters that echo mind and axis, which suits a research lab as well as a consumer app, and AuvraAi carries aura with the category on the end.
What to avoid
- The same few endings as everyone else. Why every AI startup is starting to sound the same looks at how that happens and how to step out of it.
- Names that only make sense in today's vocabulary. Words that are fashionable this year can sound dated in two.
- Spellings that need explaining. An AI tool shared in a chat message has to be typed correctly by someone who only heard it once.
- Names close to a well known AI company or model. That field is watched closely by its owners. How to check a company name before you commit covers the checks.
A quick test before you launch
Say this sentence out loud the way a customer would to a colleague: "We started using ___ for that, it saves us hours." Then imagine the product two years from now doing something different from today. If the name still sounds natural in the sentence and still fits the future product, it will hold. Last, check that the .com is available or for sale; an AI product that lives on a long workaround address looks less sure of itself than the product deserves.
